Who I work with

Everyone can see it. Nobody can change it.

Families run on patterns that were set long before anyone noticed. The roles get handed out early, they harden, and thirty years later grown adults walk into a kitchen and become who they were at eleven.

Often it is one person who comes

You do not need everybody in the room, and frequently you cannot get them. A pattern involving several people can shift substantially when one of them stops playing their part in it, which is not a compromise. It is often the most workable way in.

About the caretaker

Most families have one, and they are usually the one who writes to me. If you are the person everyone calls, who fixes it, who has never been asked how they are, then a great deal of what looks like a family problem is being carried in one body.

What people in this position usually bring

  • An adult who becomes a child around a parent
  • Estrangement, or a relationship on the edge of it
  • Being the one who always handles everything
  • A loss the family has never actually discussed

How I would work with this

One person moving is often enough to change the shape of the whole thing.
