Walnut Creek, California

You have talked about it for years. You can still feel it.

You know the story. You can tell it in order, calmly, without crying. You understand where it came from and why it happened. And your body still does the same thing when something reminds you of it.

This might be you if

  • You can explain the problem better than anyone, and nothing changes
  • You have done years of talking and you are tired of starting over
  • Your reaction arrives before your reasoning does
  • You feel it in your chest, your stomach or your throat before you have a thought about it

Understanding it and being free of it are two different things

Insight is not release. Most people who come to me arrive already knowing exactly what happened to them. They have named it. They have been told what it is. What they have never had is the moment where the charge comes off it, so the memory becomes something that happened rather than something that is still happening.

That is why I work below the words

EMDR and Brainspotting both use where you look and how the eyes move to reach the part of the nervous system that holds the event, rather than the part of the mind that narrates it. You do not have to describe it in detail. You do not have to relive it out loud. Some of the deepest sessions I have sat in have been almost entirely quiet.

What forty years has taught me

The thing people call the problem is almost never the source. It is the newest layer. Go to the source and the layers above it settle on their own, which is why the change holds instead of fading in two weeks. Heal it at the source and you do not have to keep managing it.

How I would work with this

If you have already done the talking, this is the part that has been missing.
